Local heroes climb 110 flights for fallen firefighters

On Sunday, firefighters across the nation paid tribute to the 343 firefighters who died on September 11, 2001.

Local heroes climbed 110 flights of stairs at the Tennessee Tower in Nashville to remember what New York firefighters endured that fateful day.

Each participant wore 60 to 80 pounds of full gear and carried the badge and photo of a firefighter who lost their life on 9/11.

Captain Trey Nelms climbed for Captain Patrick Brown in his fourth memorial stair climb. Nelms had the honor of meeting Brown during a visit to the New York station, before the Captain died trying to save lives in the Twin Towers.

"He was one of the most decorated on the job there," Nelms said. "He's just one of those guys everybody liked and wanted to be like. Super guy."

As he climbed, Captain Nelms went on to recall the story of Brown's heroism:

"I do not know how he went down, but I know he was in the tower and they do have a radio transmission from him that he had gotten up, they found several patients that were burned and they were going to assist them down, get them pointed in the right direction and the last thing he said was, 'this was three truck, we're still headed up."

The money raised from the event will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, to provide counseling for New York firefighters and their families.

This year's memorial stair climb sold out in 18 minutes.
