OVERTIME: Rivalry renewed

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Just 1.8 miles separate the campuses of Flowing Wells High School and Amphitheater High School.

The rivalry is renewed Thursday as the Panthers will play their first home game of the season and show off improvements to Vern Friedli Field.

It's our Overtime Game of the Week with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Our David Kelly will have a live pre-game report coming up in the KOLD News 13 at 6.

The stadium improvements this year include a new and improved main entrance to the stadium, a new field house, P.E. classrooms, a new weight room, concession stand and ticket office.

The Panthers enter the game 1-1 coming of a 39-35 triumph in Week 2 over Cholla.

Brandon Willard is in his second year at Amphi after replacing the legendary Friedli. Nothing much has changed as far as the Panthers approach, they ran the ball for 297 yards last week.

Flowing Wells is 0-2 despite having the leading rusher in the state.

Sophomore Dionte Flores has compiled 488 yards and seven touchdowns in two games. Flores ran for 201 yards in a 48-28 season-opening loss to Cholla and followed that up with 287 yards in a 34-26 defeat to Apache Junction.

The downfall for Mark Brunenkant's team has been turnovers. The Cabs have committed nine in their two losses.

Flowing Wells won last year's meeting 21-20.
