PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Mesa police arrested a 34-year-old convicted felon in connection with the shooting death of a man during a drug deal gone bad Sept. 5.

Police said Corey Delano Brookins, of Mesa, was arrested Sept. 5 after fleeing the shooting scene.

According to police, Brookins' girlfriend said he was trying to sell the victim some marijuana and had agreed on a price when the victim pulled a gun and a struggle ensued.

Brookins and his girlfriend, Devon Byars, told police the victim hit Brookins in the head with the gun, but police said he had no obvious injuries consistent with the story.

An officer said Brookins later admitted shooting the victim during the struggle. He said he turned off his cell phone after the shooting because he knew police were looking for him.

The victim was found with numerous gunshot wounds, police said.

Officers recovered more than 14 pounds of marijuana at Brookins' apartment on South Longmore.

They later found 15 pounds in a duffle bag and plastic jar after they stopped a vehicle driven by a friend of Brookins, Bryan Burns.

Burns said he had gone back to the apartment with Brookins' girlfriend and retrieved the marijuana from a table after the shooting.

No other information about the status Brookins' friend or girlfriend was made available.

Police said Brookins was on supervised probation at the time of his arrest.

Brookins was booked into jail on one count of first-degree murder and marijuana possession with intent to sell and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
