Arizona Soccer off to best start since '94

TUCSON, AZ University of Arizona women's soccer team is off to a 3-0-3 start after tying both Kansas and Illinois in the Sun Devil Classic this past weekend. Since the Wildcats have yet to be beaten, they are off to their best start since as far back as 1994 when the soccer program first began.

In Friday's match against Kansas, the Wildcats took the Jayhawks to a double overtime 1-1 draw. Arizona (3-0-2) junior transfer Alexandra Doller scored her fourth goal of the season with five minutes left in regulation to tie Kansas (3-1-1) 1-1, crediting Ana-Maria Montoya with the assist.

In a 1-1 tie against Illinois, Alexandra Doller and Jazmin Ponce led the Wildcats in shots with four apiece. Arizona senior Jazmin Ponce scored her third goal of the season off a penalty kick with nine minutes remaining in regulation. Ponce's goal sent Arizona and Illinois (3-2-1) to the double overtime period.

Among the Pac-12 Arizona is ranked No.2 in shots, saves, and corner kicks. Ponce is tied for the No.2 spot in the Pac-12 in shots with 27 and freshman Jaden DeGracie is tied for second place in assists with four. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman is tied for second in the saves category with 26 overall.

Up next, the Wildcats will host the Arizona cats Classic, Sept. 13-15. Arizona takes on Southern Utah on Fri., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. and faces Texas Tech on Sun. Sept. 15 at 1:30 p.m. All matches will be at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
