TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A local animal shelter needs some help. It's not asking for just your money, but perhaps a little elbow grease, instead.

The pets at Lost our Home Pet Foundation lost their homes once, and are about to lose their home again until the foundation moves into its new digs in Tempe.

"When the bubble sort of burst and people were losing their homes to foreclosure, the sort of forgotten part is pets," said Chris Harris of the Lost Our Home Pet Foundation.

"We kind of lost our home," he said.

The foundation's name couldn't be truer.

"We kind of lost our home," Harris said.

It lost its lease on its current building, so the workers and animals have to move.

"They just want restaurants and retail here and we don't quite fall into either one of those categories," Harris said about the foundation's previous Tempe home.

The news of the move caused panic among the workers and, in turn, their furry friends.

"Crazy, 'cause if we don't have any place for us to be, we don't have any place for them either," Harris said.

"Our main focus is make sure these guys are safe and make sure we find them good homes," Harris said. "And if we don't have a place, a physical place where we can sit down and go through all of the aspects of finding them a good home, then we're doing a disservice to them."

The group found a new location in Tempe, but, like its pets, it needs a little tender loving care.

"We just need to put up a few walls, run some venting and air-conditioning ducts and drop some electricity and internet and stuff like that," Harris said. "Yeah, we need a little help."

That's where the public can play a role. Volunteer handymen or women with the needed skills are being sought.

"We don't exactly have large coffers of money laying around," Harris said.

Though there is some relief in sight, the foundation doesn't want its situation to become desperate.

"We would have figured it out, there's no doubt about that," Harris said.
