TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Six months after becoming the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis is solidifying his image as a progressive pope.

In an interview appearing in Catholic journals around the world, Pope Francis warns that the moral structure of the church, "is likely to fall like a house of cards" if it remains obsessed with abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraception.

Pope Francis says the church needs to be more open to everyone, and should focus on healing the larger wounds of society.

The pope's comments are making news at a time with some American bishops are criticizing him for not making moral issues like abortion a priority.

"I was sort of thunderstruck by some of the things he said," Father James Martin said. "It's a very candid assessment of the kind of pressures he faces in his job and his response."

The pope's interview was conducted over three days and was approved by the Vatican.
