TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Mayor Jonathan Rothschild is kicking off his school-year reading challenge today at Rio Vista Elementary School.

The goal is to emphasize the importance of reading.

Students will set goals and keep track of the time they spend reading.  All Tucson-area school districts are participating in the Mayor's Reading Challenge.

The mayor will kick off the challenge at an assembly at the midtown school today at 2 p.m.

Children in the school's library club will perform a skit on reading.  Mayor Rothschild will explain the program and library cards will be given to the children.

Teachers who sign up their classrooms to take the reading challenge can recommend students for consideration to record a video book review. The book review is similar to PBS's ‘Reading Rainbow' television show and will air on Tucson's Channel 12.

Book reviews will be recorded at City Hall with students sitting in the mayor's chair.
