MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A close call in Marana as a fast moving fire almost spread to nearby homes. Firefighters are trying to figure out what caused the blaze that sparked just after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Thick, black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from at least 10 miles away. The fire tore through a vacant mobile home off I-10 and Marana exit.

"I was so scared my house was going to go up in flames," Joan Cassell said. She lives next door and grabbed a water hose to keep it from spreading over to her home.

"Lots of flames coming out from the top of the house and big explosions," Cassell said.

"A lot of flames," Ardis Smith, a neighbor, said. "I went to the house and took some pictures. Black smoke just pouring out the roof."

Neighbors called 911 while bystanders tried to put it out.

"I was like hurry up fire department, get here faster. Get here faster," Smith said.

Northwest Fire District arrived with several big ladder engines. Firefighters used a chainsaw to cut through part of the mobile home to get inside and douse the flames. A bystander along with a firefighter were taken to the hospital with minor injuries they sustained while fighting the blaze.
