Zone emphasis

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Last season the Arizona Wildcats struggled at time when they faced zone defenses. The plan this year is to not allow that to happen.

UA is in the second phase of Sean Miller's four-day mini camps. The Cats are practicing four straight days followed by two days off.

One point of emphasis during these initial eight practices has been working on the Wildcats offense against zone concepts.

Arizona figures to have a rotation of about eight players this season and Miller says he plans to use forwards Aaron Gordon and Brandon Ashley with three guards. It's when he goes to that combination that he anticipates teams will try to zone Arizona.

The Wildcats are going to have to find a dependable perimeter shooter this season. Right now they don't possess a clear three-point threat that might make it difficult to shoot teams out of zone.

Junior Nick Johnson is the team's best returning long ball threat. He shot 39 percent from behind the arc in 2012-13.
