TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson is a potential site for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Diving Team Trials, which will determine the final team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

USA Diving, in partnership with the United States Olympic Committee, said Tucson is one of six cities considered for the event.

"We're thrilled about making the short list of cities to host such a prestigious national event," Brent DeRaad, Visit Tucson President and CEO stated in a news release. "We thank the University of Arizona, including Athletic Director Greg Byrne and Director of Operations Dr. Michele Mitchell, for offering the university's facilities for this event, and we appreciate the City of Tucson's support on the event bid. The quality of the university's facilities, with Dr. Mitchell's prominence in our nation's diving history, served us well on this bid."

Other cities under consideration include Atlanta, GA; Greensboro, N.C.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Riverside, Calif.

"We are thrilled to see so many incredible cities express an interest in hosting our Olympic Trials. The Trials are such a special event for us, and we are looking forward to seeing what these cities can offer as we aim to make the 2016 Trials our best yet," Linda Paul, USA Diving President and CEO stated in a news release.

USA Diving staff and board members will select finalists on October 21 after visiting each city.
