Mesa police safely take a man into custody after a dangerous and destructive seven-hour standoff ends.
Police say Dwayne Clayton, 54, barricaded himself inside his estranged wife's home late Friday evening.
According to Mesa police, officers dodged gunfire coming from Clayton inside the home while negotiators tried to come to a safe resolution.
After firing several rounds of tear gas into the home, police say Clayton still refused to exit peacefully.
The Mesa Police Tactical Unit eventually rammed an armored vehicle several times into the side of the home and officers released the K-9 unit, forcing Clayton outside and into police custody without serious injuries.
"This was a very dangerous situation that came to a positive conclusion due to the patience of the officers on scene," Mesa Police spokesman Steve Berry said. "We are very pleased that this situation was able to be resolved with no loss of life."
Clayton is being treated at a local hospital for cuts and a dog bite. Police say he will be charged once he is released from the hospital.
