AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

The octopus at the Akron Zoo picked her own name Thursday morning!

Her new name is Nani, which means "beautiful" in Hawaiian.

Over 1,400 names were submitted for the Akron Zoo's name the octopus contest last month.

Zoo officials narrowed the entries down to three and they were placed into the octopus tank Thursday for her to select her own name.

Nani was the one she touched first with one of her eight arms.

The person who submitted the winning name will receive an octopus prize pack and a behind-the-scenes.
