(RNN) - The government shutdown extended into its second week.

President Barack Obama and House leaders met this week to discuss a potential deal to end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling temporarily.

Three researchers who work at American universities received the Nobel Prize in chemistry. The three men received the award for their work in the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit Earth, has died. He was one of the original seven NASA astronauts. He was 88 years old.
