(RNN) - A 7-year-old, extremely overweight standard dachshund received the love and care he needed to lose more than 50 pounds.

Obie, the pet of an elderly couple who couldn't give him the exercise he needed and wouldn't deny him any food, weighed 77 pounds a little more than a year ago.

A standard dachshund should weigh a maximum of 32 pounds. Obie was so heavy his stomach dragged the ground, and he couldn't even lick his paws.

The Facebook page called Obie Dog Journey documented the dog's transformation from being so big he could barely move to a spry dog running on the beach.

A relative of the owners gave him to Portland, OR, dog rescuer Nora Vanatta, after he was so fat he could barely walk. Vanatta exercised the obese weiner dog into shape, according to Jezebel.

After undergoing surgery, Obie is more active, and enjoys spending time at the beach while dressed in a dogkini.

Donations will be accepted for Obie's continued care. Proceeds will also go towards helping The Retirement Home For Senior Wieners in Florida.
