MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A boy accused in his mother's murder and his friend, who he allegedly asked to help, have both plead not guilty to first-degree murder.

According to court officials, Mike Helms, 16, and Christian Lee Blakely, 17, made their pleas in Maricopa County on Wednesday morning. Both teens are being charged as adults.

Helms had recently gotten into trouble at school. He was mad at his mother, 36-year-old Tina Spencer, because she grounded him and took away his cell phone, among other restrictions, according to police.

Court paperwork shows the teen attacked Spencer with a hammer and a frying pan.

Helms faces charges of first-degree murder of his mother, attempted first-degree murder of his stepfather, three counts of aggravated assault on the stepfather, concealment of a dead body and tampering with evidence.

Helms' friend, Blakely, is accused of being an accomplice to the murder. He faces charges of first-degree murder, concealment of a dead body and tampering with evidence, said Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato.

Police said the two teens moved Spencer's body to a shed and tried to clean up the crime scene.

Helms was a Junior ROTC at Gilbert High School.
