PIMA COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Whooping cough cases are
up throughout Southern Arizona, with many cases being seen in local school
So far in 2013 there have
been 69 whooping cough cases in Pima County, up from 46 reported in 2012.
Some Vail School District students
are out of school because of the whooping cough, the district has seen 15 cases
so far this year.
In the past several weeks
Empire High School alone has reported three students having whooping cough. The health department is classifying it as an
outbreak and some kids are being kept home who have not been vaccinated for pertussis,
the official name for whooping cough.
Pima County Health experts
recommend those who have young children or a baby get them vaccinated for
whooping cough, which could be deadly for small children.
Also health experts say if
a child has a persistent cough, take them to the doctor to get them checked
