TPS renewal levy passes

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With all precincts reporting, it looks as though the Toledo Public Schools' levy renewal will pass. There are currently 24,786 for the levy, and 13,465 against.

Toledo Public Schools made another attempt to renew a levy with this November ballot. Supporters gathered at the downtown library to watch results come in from the polls.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant was out Tuesday still trying to gain support for the 6.5 mill operating levy. The levy is not a new tax, but a five-year renewal. The district has been stressing that during their campaigning.

The levy would generate $13 million if it passes. If it fails, district officials say they'll be forced to make about $7 million in cuts. Durant said he remained optimistic that voters would be on the side of TPS.

"I'm very optimistic," he said. "Having an athletic background and playing football at the University of Toledo, we prepare to win and that's the attitude that Coach Pinkel had instilled in us as players, and my athleticism carries over into my career. We plan these things out and you plan to win and those are the things we're looking at as a district and TPS family."
