TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A groundbreaking ceremony lured hundreds of people, many of them Casa Grande residents, to a remote field a couple miles east of I-10 on Florence Avenue.

The large crowd signified just how important the people in the small community of 50,000 view the project.

It's called PhoenixMart and it will bring more than 9,000 jobs to the area.

PhoenixMart is a distribution center located in the heart of the desert.

But it's more than that.

It will link like projects already doing business in China and Dubai.

It's a place where eventually 2,000 manufacturers can go to sell their products to buyers without a middleman.

Casa Grande beat out several large and well known communities across the country for the site.

It's generally because of location.

Casa Grande is in the middle of the Sun Corridor and lies along the Canamex Highway, linking the ports of Mexico through the United States and into Canada.

The new Union Pacific rail lines, inland ports and Interstate 11 all make the area an attractive location to do international business.

Tucson and Pima County are working to develop the inland ports and rail links to help make it possible.

"If you draw a 30-mile radius around this site, you get North Tucson, Marana, the Southeast Phoenix area," says Bob Jackson, Casa Grande's Mayor. "It's a great opportunity for anybody in Arizona to get a job."

Former Labor Secretary Elizabeth Chou told the crowd "Today the focus is not on Wall Street."

The focus today was on Main Street, specifically Main Street Casa Grande.

It's the small and medium businesses that will be created by PhoenixMart which will put Americans back to work.

"American and Arizona are recovering from what economists call the Great Recession," says PhoenixMart President Jeremy Schoenfelder. "America's entrepreneurial spirit is coming back in a big way."

Projects like this will allow those entrepreneurs to gather in one place to distribute to the world.
