Sunnyside budget override rejection jeopardizes jobs

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Dozens of jobs in the Sunnyside School District are in jeopardy after voters rejected a budget over-ride measure in Tuesday night's election.

Programs at the Ocotillo Early Learning Center are some things that could be on the chopping block as the district looks for ways to save the $5 million the current override funds.

Voters Tuesday cut off that funding. About 300 more voters said "no" to the budget override than said "yes."

The district has said it would have used the money for the non-special education program at the Ocotillo Early Learning Center, all-day Kindergarten, security monitors for campus safety, counselors, PE teachers, music teachers in elementary schools, librarians, nurses and elementary and middle school band and orchestra teachers.

These are programs that affect children and nearly 120 full-time positions.

There's now a proposal to ask parents which programs they want to keep and where the cuts will be made now that the override has not passed.
