Authorities investigating how Amber Alert suspect got into Mexico

PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) -

Enormous relief as a kidnapping suspect is in a Tucson jail Thursday night and a mother re-unites with her baby. But, new questions are emerging about this case.

As we first reported last night, the suspect in a California Amber Alert was captured and turned over to Customs and Border Protection agents at the Lukeville Port of Entry. Investigators believe he crossed the border in Tijuana. But how did he slip past CBP agents that screen cars crossing South?

Investigators are trying to figure out how Mesut Guler got into Mexico. Tucson News Now talked to police in Sunnyvale, California Thursday.

"He probably had a well over eight hour head start, so it could be very well he crossed over the border well before the alert even being put out," said Captain Dave Pitts, Sunnyvale Police Dept.

Pitts says the Amber Alert was only in the state of California. A quick trace of his cell phone showed he was in San Diego and led detectives to believe he would cross through the Tijuana port of entry.

Cameras near the border also capture hundreds of vehicles a day and will alert agents if there is an Amber Alert, if the car is stolen or has a history of illegal activity. CBP agents are stumped.

"We don't know how he got passed, was he in a different vehicle?," asked a CBP spokesman.

Many questions and such few answers. Guler left his home in Sunnyvale with his two week old son after a disagreement with the child's mother about moving out of state. Police say he kidnapped his son, then texted the boy's mother saying he would hurt the boy and himself if she called police.

The child is said to be in good condition. The boy was reunited with his mother Thursday afternoon in Arizona. Guler appeared in court Thursday morning. A judge ordered he be held without bond. His next court date is in two weeks.
