CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield police are investigating a two vehicle crash that left one man dead.

The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the 5100 block of Courthouse Road. A Honda CR-V traveling south on Courthouse Road lost control and crossed into the northbound lanes, hitting a Chevrolet Suburban, according to police.

The passenger in the CR-V, 39-year-old Matthew Mericle, was taken to Chippenham Hospital where he later died. The drivers of both vehicles and a passenger in the Suburban were also taken to VCU Medical Center in serious condition.

The accident closed the road for five hours and a detour was put in place. The road has since re-opened. The crash remains under investigation.
