CINCINNATI (RNN) – Despite playing without two injured starters Tuesday, the Xavier Musketeers defeated Tennessee in the Vols' season opener, 67-63.

The Musketeers (2-0) led by as many as 10 points early in the first half, and let the Volunteers (0-1) get within two points, but finally pulled away to win by four.

The Volunteers top scorer was senior guard Jordan McRae with 23 points and five assists. Jeronne Maymon, who missed the entire 2012-13 season because of injury, returned with seven points and 10 rebounds.

McRae made the game close in the end – hitting a crucial 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the second half to make the score 65-63. But guard Antonio Barton's foul sent Xavier guard Myles Davis to the foul line, where he made both shots and turned it into a two possession game.

The defeat ends the Volunteers 14-game home opener win streak. Tennessee's first home game is Saturday against the University of South Carolina Upstate Spartans.
