'Tis the season for seasonal work

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Holiday scenes of Santa are already at Park Place with a "Santastic" display.  Seasonal employment has also arrived, just two weeks away from the busiest shopping day of the year.

"It gets crazy, hectic.  But at the same time, we try and have fun," said Rafael "Juice" Diaz, owner of Royalties, a T-shirt business.  He's no stranger to holiday shoppers or hiring holiday help.

"You want to make a little money to buy your parents some gifts, your brothers and sisters some gifts, man?  Come help us out, we'll pay you," he said.

"Holiday employment is great for maybe like the stay at home parent that's looking to add maybe just a little bit of extra income to the household for the holiday season or maybe the college student that's on break right now," said Brighid Brown, marketing manager for Park Place and Tucson Mall.  She said that retailers in the two locations have a variety of spots open for the holidays, and that those positions will change over time.

"They'll be hiring throughout the season.  But it is best to kind of go online and look now and get your application in early," Brown said.

Jim Mize at Pima County One Stop reported that many of the positions available in the area right now are part-time, and said that those on unemployment usually seek a full-time job as a replacement.

"You're going to see a lot of the stores are going to be looking for just seasonal; however, some will be looking for more of a permanent basis.  It's something you should be sure to ask each retailer when you're applying," Brown said.

Sometimes a seasonal job can lead to something more.  Diaz said that happened with some of his employees

"They literally begged me for a chance, and I was like, 'Ah, you're just a kid.  I don't know,' and five years later, they're still with me.  They helped me grow," he said.
