CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Thousands of cards are being signed to say thank you and send a "touch of home" to service members, veterans and military families during the holidays.

The Tiffany Society of Women Leaders of Cincinnati and the American Red Cross teamed up on Friday to sign cards for the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.

"We sign thousands of cards in our region and in the country, then they are sent to service members and their families overseas and also right here in greater Cincinnati," explains Trish Smitson, CEO of the Red Cross for the Greater Cincinnati-Dayton region. "We encourage the signers to write very personal messages. It is really a message of thanks and gratitude for what our service members do everyday all over the world."

The special guest at the event was Sergeant Travis Burton of the U.S. Army National guard, who recently returned from Afghanistan.

"If you just received one card, it brightens up your day. It means a lot to get something from the states, even if it's from a stranger," explains Burton. "It kind of keeps your connected to the United States and it really makes you feel like what you are doing matters to people."

Accompanying Burton were his pups Buckeye and Breezy, part of a litter of seven born during Burton's last stint in Afghanistan this year.

The pups mother, Sheba, was adopted by Travis' unit in Afghanistan. Sheba was stray dog that followed the unit and protected them from other wild dogs.
