TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An altercation between two USMS prisoners has left one inmate dead this morning, according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred at the Corrections Corporation of America-Florence Correctional Center, a private prison contracted by the U.S Marshals.

Homicide detectives were able to determine that at 9 a.m. the correction officers were conducting an inspection when they observed a 43-year-old prisoner assaulting his 55-year-old cellmate.

The assault occurred inside of a cell both men were housed in.

The 43-year-old prisoner ignored the verbal commands as he continued to assault the other prisoner. Correction officers entered into the cell and subdued the suspect.

The victim received immediate medical attention but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The prisoners were from the San Diego area, and were being held pending their transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

There was known animosity between the men and neither expressed any concern over being housed together.

Detectives are still in the process of working with other law enforcement agencies to make notification.
