A Tucson Police officer from the South Division heard gunfire while driving southbound through the intersection of South Park Avenue and East Irvington Road last night.
According to Sgt. Maria Hawke, the officer neared the intersection of Park Ave. and Drexel Rd. where several individuals, who were in a gray 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, flagged him down.
The officer was told that one of the occupants (adult male) of the Chevrolet Silverado had been struck by gunfire and was in the bed of the truck.
After coordinating for additional police resources, the officer began to administer CPR to the male shooting victim.
Emergency medical personnel from the Tucson Fire Department assisted and transported the shooting victim to a local trauma center.
The victim succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital and was pronounced deceased shortly after 11 p.m.
He has been identified as 18-year-old Antonio Flores.
Detectives from several investigative units responded to further the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that a total of six individuals were riding in the Chevrolet Silverado that evening. They were stopped in the parking lot of a Circle K store located at South Campbell Ave. and Drexel Rd.
While there, a dark colored vehicle approached them, and one of the occupants fired an unknown projectile at the group associated with the Chevrolet Silverado.
The projectile struck at least one of the individuals, but none of them appeared to be injured. The unknown occupants of the dark vehicle quickly drove out of the parking lot and began traveling westbound on Drexel Rd.
The occupants of the Silverado caught up to the dark vehicle in the vicinity of Drexel Rd and South Copper Plate Avenue. At that point, an unknown individual or individuals from the dark vehicle fired multiple gunshots at the occupants of the Silverado, striking Mr. Flores at least once.
The suspect vehicle then fled the area and was last seen traveling Southbound on Cooper Plate Ave.
As a result of the initial investigative efforts relating to the shooting/homicide investigation, portions of Drexel Rd and Park Ave. were closed off to vehicular traffic.
An officer positioned his vehicle on the roadway of Park Ave, just north of East Drexel Rd. While there, the officer engaged in a confrontation with the occupants of a dark colored 2006 Ford Ranger, who approached him as he was conducting point control.
During the course of the confrontation, the driver of the Ford Ranger quickly began maneuvering to complete a U-turn in the roadway in order to drive northbound on South Park Ave. The officer was seen hanging to the passenger window/door of the Ford Ranger for a few moments before ultimately disengaging from the vehicle.
At that point, the officer fired his duty weapon multiple times at the Ford Ranger, striking it and the driver at least one time. The officer was not injured.
The Ford Ranger continued traveling South Park Ave. but came to a stop after colliding with a wall near the intersection of Park Avenue and East Bantam Road.
Immediately after the collision, the driver of the Ford Ranger, later identified as Ramon Cedeno-Soto, exited the vehicle and ran into a nearby mobile home park. He entered a residence and refused to come out.
After one hour later, Mr. Cedeno-Soto exited the mobile home and was taken into custody without further incident. An adult female friend and her two children were inside of the mobile home. Neither of them were injured.
Mr. Cedeno-Soto was transported to the hospital for treatment of an apparent gunshot wound. He was arrested and charged with one count of Endangerment, a felony offense.
