Sierra Vista, AZ (KOLD) - After two years as the head coach of the Buena Colts, Ryan Scherling has resigned.

The news was first reported by the Sierra Vista Herald.

Scherling led the Colts to their first playoff appearance in nearly thirty years last season. Buena finished 2012 with 8 wins and 3 losses.

This season began amidst turmoil as Scherling was put on paid administrative leave during a district investigation over whether he used a derrogatory word toward students in his classroom. The district ultimately voted not to fire him and kept him on both as a teacher and as the head football coach.

Buena finished the season 6-5, losing to Mesquite in the first round of the playoffs.

Scherling told Daniel Gaona of the Arizona Daily Star the the resignation was mutual.
