The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 have reopened near Tucson, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The roadway closed at Orange Grove Road around 8 p.m. because of a serious collision.
An accident closed the section of I-10 for nearly 3 hours.
According to Northwest Fire Captain Adam Goldberg, the patient hit a guard rail and was impaled by a piece of the guard rail, making the extraction a very lengthy process.
A helicopter transported the patient to a hospital.
The patient has sustained critical injuries.
