Greenville police said they charged a man with ill treatment of animals and torture after a video surfaced of him viciously beating a dog.
Police said they arrested Steron Jihad Glover at his apartment in the Mallard Cove complex on Saturday.
Officers said they received a tip about a video posted on a social networking site showing a man they believed to be Glover punching and kicking a dog several times as the animal wailed in agony.
Officers said they executed a search warrant and discovered evidence of abuse and marijuana inside the apartment. Police said the dog was taken from the home by animal control.
Glover was also charged with simple possession of marijuana. Animal torture is a felony offense punishable by up to five years in prison.
Glover spoke exclusively with FOX Carolina Monday after he signed over the rights of his puppy to animal control. He said he regrets his actions and that he was reacting with anger when he returned home to a mess the puppy made.
"The dog tore up my whole house, and I disciplined the dog," said Glover. "I see I went too far and I apologize for that."
Glover said he hopes his 7-month-old pit bull puppy finds a good home.
"I wish the best for the dog, and whoever get that dog," said Glover. "Because you have a really nice dog."
Glover was released from the Greenville County Detention Center on a $7,500 bond Sunday.
The dog that was abused has already found a future home after he was taken to Greenville County Animal Care. Employees at the shelter said the dog is named Gucci and he suffered no major injuries.
"He does seem to be a little apprehensive of men initially, but once he realizes he's safe he seems to be OK," said Susan Bufano of Greenville Animal Care. "He's young a guy, he should be able to bounce back."
Bufano said although Gucci has already been adopted, there are several animals at their facility who have also been mistreated still searching for a home. She urges anyone moved by Gucci's story to come visit their residents if they are able to provide a good home.
