SUSD Board meeting tonight to discuss proposed cuts

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Happening today, some hard choices for the Sunnyside School District after a budget override failed for the district.  The Governing Board looks to approve more than $5 million in cuts.

Big decisions will be made at the Sunnyside Unified School District meeting this evening.

The initial ideas for these cuts began at another board meeting that happened several weeks ago, as SUSD officials presented a list of proposed cuts.   This happened after voters rejected a budget override measure in the recent election.

The proposed cuts add up to more than $5 million dollars.

Here are a few of the cuts on the list – closing down Los Ranchitos Elementary School and Chaparral Middle School, redesigning Ocotillo Learning Center, reducing library staff, reducing campus monitors, releasing elementary specialists and eliminating 5th grade music.

The board meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. tonight.
