QUEEN CREEK, AZ (CBS5) -

Six people were burned, including an 11-year-old girl with burns over half her body, when someone poured gasoline on a backyard fire in Queen Creek on Tuesday night.

The 11-year-old girl  suffered burns over much of her upper body, including her face and head, said Maricopa County sheriff's deputy Joaquin Enriquez.

Three people, including another child, a 19-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, suffered second- and third-degree burns, he said.

The people were gathered around a "warming" fire that was burning boards in a 50-gallon drum about 9 p.m., Enriquez said.

A man in his 30s is believed to have poured gasoline from a plastic gas can onto the fire when it exploded, burning the victims, who were standing or sitting close to the fire.

Three burn victims were flown to Maricopa Medical Center while the other three were taken by ambulance, he said. All victims were alert and conscious before they were hospitalized.

All the victims were related, Enriquez said.

There was no update on anyone's condition Wednesday morning.

Enriquez said the investigation was continuing to determine whether criminal charges would be pursued.

No other information was immediately available.
