Local Black Friday shoppers in line since 5 a.m. Tuesday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A group of Black Friday shoppers have been waiting in line outside the Myrtle Beach Best Buy store since 5:00a.m. Tuesday morning. It's a tradition the group has upheld for more than five years, in an attempt to get the best deals. But, they say it has also become a holiday tradition.

"It's nice and cold and wet and rainy…but it's worth it," Richard Worcester said.

"I just get along with everyone so well. We sit back have a good time joke, people watch. It's fun," Guy Dean II said.

Dean and Worcester met more than five years ago while they were waiting in line.

Last year the group's fun tradition hit a snag when a Myrtle Beach Police Officer told them they weren't allowed to set up tents per a city ordinance. But, this year the city is allowing tents to be set up for the holiday weekend only- including Wednesday.

"It makes us feel good now because we can stay out of the elements at night when we sleep," Worcester said.

Dean, II said Best Buy asked the group to wait until the store closed Wednesday to set up their tents. In the meantime, they set up makeshift tents using tarps, which Dean, II said worked out well to protect themselves from Wednesday's intense wind and cold weather.

"We just hide in here from the wind if we get too cold," Dean said.

The group won't have to wait in line quite as long as they've had to in previous years. In 2012, Best Buy's doors opened at midnight on Black Friday morning. This year they're opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Dean, II said he'd rather wait outside the extra six hours so that the store employees can enjoy the holiday.

"The midnight thing is fine because everybody got to spend time with their family," Dean, II said.

Regardless of the ups and downs the group faces throughout their days waiting in line, they say people can call them "crazy" all they want, but this is a holiday tradition they don't plan on giving up any time soon.

"I'm here because I want to be here," Dean, II said.

"Really, there isn't probably anything that would stop me from coming," Worcester said.
