TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson News Now has learned that on November 25th, Pima County Sheriff deputies had an encounter with 46-year old Scott Mitchell. According to P.C.S.D. Lieutenant Douglas Hanna, deputies responded to the Northwest side home for a welfare check after his mom reported unusual behavior from her son.

Mitchell was taken in for a mental evaluation at a crisis resource center, but was released 45 minutes later after an order evaluation request was declined. Mitchell was asked to voluntarily stay but refused.

The latest run in with law enforcement on Monday turned deadly after Pima County Sheriff deputies were forced into a standoff situation after getting a call from the home owner about Mitchell threatening to kill himself.

After hours of attempted negotiation talks with Mitchell for most of the day on Monday, SWAT sent in a robot to try to reach out to Mitchell when he started shooting. Mitchell then shot towards officers when they used chemicals similar to tear gas to try to get him out.

Sergeant Derek Tyra fired back killing Mitchell on scene. Tyra has been with P.C.S.D. for 14 years.

Tyra has been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure.
