Last day to timely ship Christmas gifts is fast approaching

(RNN) – You've selected the perfect gift for someone who lives far away and won't be visiting for Christmas. The next hurdle is to make sure the present arrives on time for Christmas.

Until Amazon's drone delivery shipping system becomes a reality, you'll have to rely on shipping's old standbys.

The dates listed for USPS and UPS are calculated for domestic shipping with arrival on Dec. 24, 2013. FedEx will ship on Christmas.

If you're shipping with the United States Postal Service, you should have your packages ready to go out by Dec. 20-23, depending upon which service you choose, for delivery by Christmas Eve.

  • Dec. 20 – First Class Mail
  • Dec. 21 – Priority Mail
  • Dec. 23 – Priority Mail Express

If you're shipping with UPS, you should have your packages ready to go out by Dec. 13-23, depending upon which service you choose, for delivery by Christmas Eve.

  • Dec. 13-23 – UPS Ground (packages shipped via UPS Ground take from one to seven business days to deliver)
  • Dec. 21 – UPS Second Day Air
  • Dec. 23 – UPS Next Day Air

UPS recommends that you allow seven business days for ground shipments in the two weeks leading up to Christmas, in order to guarantee that your package will arrive in time for the holiday.

If you're shipping with FedEx, you should have your packages ready to ship by Dec. 12-25, depending upon which service you choose, for delivery by Christmas.

  • Dec. 12 – FedEx SmartPost (Some exceptions apply)
  • Dec. 17 – FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Ground
  • Dec. 19 – FedEx Express Saver
  • Dec. 21 – FedEx 2Day and FedEx 2Day A.M.
  • Dec. 23 – FedEx Standard Overnight, FedEx Priority Overnight and FedEx First Overnight
  • Dec. 25 – FedEx SameDay

This is just a brief overview of some common shipping options for U.S. delivery. Check with your preferred carrier for further information.

USPS, UPS, and FedEx each offer packaging tips to help you make sure your package is ready for shipping without delay.

Regardless of which service you choose, keep in mind that, if possible, you should allow an extra day or two (or more, when possible) for shipping, because inclement weather could pop up and delay the shipment of your package.
