TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A man who escaped from jail in Arizona and then killed a couple in New Mexico while on the run will serve life in prison.

Jurors who convicted John McCluskey of first degree murder couldn't decide between the death penalty and life in prison.

When that happens, the judge, by law, must give McCluskey a life sentence.

McClusky murdered an elderly couple after escaping from jail in 2010. The defense painted him as a broken man with a low IQ who suffered a hard life of abuse.
