A Phoenix murder suspect is dead after a chase and shooting on Tucson's south side.
U.S. Marshals had been conducting surveillance on the suspect, who was later identified as Hector Karaca, at a La Quinta near the airport Thursday.
When Karaca and several other men left the hotel, U.S. Marshal's called Tucson Police for assistance. Law enforcement officials followed the men to the Spectrum mall parking lot in South Tucson. That is when police say Karaca car-jacked a man in the parking lot.
Tucson News Now spoke to the 21-year-old who came face to face with Karaca just minutes before the high speed chase started.
The man who requested his identity not be revealed said that he had just gone to a smoke shop in the area when a man armed with a gun rushed up to him and said "Give me your keys or I will shoot you."
The man says he gave Karaca the car keys with no argument. He said Karaca just peeled out of the parking lot with police right behind him. The man said the Camaro that was taken from him was a prized possession he had bought just a month ago.
Tucson police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer said police aerial units witnessed the carjacking and contacted marked units on the ground. Police say Karaca fled the scene and that led to a high speed chase that ended with a crash at 22nd Street and 5th Avenue.
Police say Karaca's accomplice jumped out the car near Pima Community college. After the crash, police say Karaca jumped over fences and ran through yards.
"As our units began to arrive in the area, he went over the fence into the alley south of 22nd, at which time multiple units witnessed the individual put a gun to his head. He gave himself a gunshot wound to the head," said Widmer.
According to AZ Central, Karaca was accused of shooting and killing two people, a 17-year-old girl and her 25-year-old boyfriend at a Phoenix home in October. A vehicle belonging to one of the victims had been stolen and was found burned out the next day.
Police said Karaca knew the couple and that he had not been seen since late October.
