(RNN) - If you want to be the best dressed at this year's Christmas party, think "ugly."

Tacky Christmas sweater parties have become popular in the past few years, and if you haven't attended one, here are some tips to help you get ugly.

First off, no one is a fan of the faces of presidents, other public figures and celebrities being plastered on a sweater. So, use a photo as a centerpiece with which to taunt your peers.

If you want to go for a more blinding effect, light up the party with a string of Christmas lights dangling from your sweater. The tree doesn't have to be the only decoration that gets admired and stared at in disbelief. Just find any sweater you want to use and tie a few light bulbs around it.

If you don't have a sweater to spare or creatively mess up, head to your local Salvation Army, Rescue Mission or thrift store to purchase one.

There's also nothing like warming the hearts of others with a hand-crafted fireplace that actually shows a blaze of fire coming from the center of your stomach. Also, for more decorations, cut out and paste your own stockings on the fireplace for extra fun.

Wear a small wreath on your sweater if it doesn't weigh you down, and a big red Christmas tree made out of garland is sure to be ugly. On top of that, Frosty the Snowman can be your choice of decoration. You could use buttons for the eyes, a real carrot for the nose (just don't poke anyone) and a row of Oreos for the mouth. A little super glue will go a long way with this project.

Wild colors and stripes that may or may not be the traditional red, green and white Christmas colors will shock onlookers who can't figure out if you got the same dress-code memo that they did. The whole idea is to be the wild card and keep them guessing.

One embellishment you can't forget when decorating an ugly sweater is ornaments. Use the leftover ornaments you used to trim the tree with to show your Christmas spirit.

Turtlenecks, V-neck sweaters and vests with reindeer, other animals and symbolic Christmas characters will help make the various designs of sweaters look very odd.

Speaking of odd sweaters, imagine the attention you will get from wearing a big, red bow on a sweater. People may laugh at your attempt at being "the gift," yet your look will be special.

Sweaters filled with garland, fur and homemade patches of artwork are bound to get comments.

Also, who says an adult man or woman can't wear a humongous teddy bear, Grinch, Santa or elf? If you have children, they will thank you for it. You will be considered cool, even though we know if you leave the house that won't be true.

The last thing you can do to make an ugly Christmas sweater is use wordplay. What displays being ugly more than naughty words on a sweater? You may get a lump of coal Christmas morning, but the words "I rolled over Santa like a wrecking ball" and "I twerk for red velvet cake" is well worth the backlash.

Ugly sweater ideas from Snoop Lion, formerly known as Snoop Dogg, and Matt Damon can prove to be helpful also, according to Huffington Post.

Make the holidays memorable with some or all of these decorative tips and ideas. These looks are perfect for the popular and growing ugly Christmas sweater parties. If you can imagine it, create it. It's OK to be "ugly" this holiday.
