NEW YORK, Dec. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The federal judge overseeing nearly 100 Tylenol lawsuits (http://www.tylenollawsuitclaims.com/) filed on behalf of people who suffered severe liver damage, allegedly due to the ingestion of an over-the-counter brand Tylenol product, has granted Plaintiffs leave to file a Motion to Compel the Defense to respond fully to their request for admissions. According to an Order filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, on November 20th, the Defense had until December 6th to respond to the Plaintiffs' Motion. The matter is to be discussed on December 17, 2013, during the proceeding's next Status Conference. (In Re: Tylenol (Acetaminophen) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2436)
"Our Firm is investigating Tylenol liver damage claims, and we have heard from a number of consumers who allegedly suffered severe liver injuries following use of a Tylenol-brand product. We are monitoring this litigation very closely," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is offering free legal consultations to victims of severe acetaminophen-induced liver failure that resulted in hospitalization, liver transplantation, or death, allegedly associated with the use of Tylenol-brand medications.
Tylenol Liver Damage
In 2009, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that acetaminophen-induced liver failure was the major cause of acute liver failure in the U.S. between 1998 and 2003. From 1990 to 1998, products containing the ingredient were blamed for 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths annually.
Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol-brand over-the-counter products, including Tylenol PM, Tylenol Arthritis Pain, Tylenol Sinus Congestion & Pain, and Tylenol Cold & Flu, as well as a number of Tylenol infants' and children's products. This past August, Johnson & Johnson announced it would be adding more prominent warning labels to Tylenol medications regarding the risk of serious liver injuries. The warnings, which Johnson & Johnson said would appear on the cap of each bottle, would read: "CONTAINS ACETAMINOPHEN" and "ALWAYS READ THE LABEL." Extra Strength Tylenol was scheduled to start appearing with the new warnings in October, with other products scheduled to follow.
All of the Tylenol lawsuits that have been filed in the federal litigation underway in Pennsylvania allege that patients suffered serious liver damage due to the acetaminophen in Tylenol products, even when they were used as directed.
Alleged victims of Tylenol liver damage may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
