UAMC adopts new flu shot policy

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

This flu season, the University of Arizona Health Network is joining academic medical centers nationwide in adopting a new policy to protect the health of patients and staff.

Under this new policy, all UAHN health-care personnel – employees, physicians, residents, fellows, temporary workers, trainees, volunteers, students, vendors, medical staff and privileged practitioners, regardless of employer, who work in any UAHN facility – are expected to receive a flu shot by Jan. 31, 2014, or wear a surgical mask in patient areas throughout the influenza season.

Personnel can be exempted from getting vaccinated if they have a medical or religious reason.

Hospitalized patients with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of influenza. Studies show that more than a quarter of patients that catch the flu while staying in the hospital die.

Carondelet Hospitals in Tucson and Nogales have a mandatory flu shot policy in place for their employees as well that started last year.

The Tucson Medical Center also has a similar policy in place.
