(CNN) – Syrian opposition sources say at least 83 people were killed when regime helicopters dropped barrels filled with explosives on a dozen rebel neighborhoods in Aleppo.

Twenty-seven children were among those reported dead. Local activists called the raids "unprecedented."

Activists say barrel bombs were dropped from Syrian helicopters up to 25 times.

The dust and ghostly terror of the aftermath could be seen from the streets.

The bombing seemed to be both devastatingly destructive and devastatingly random.

Sometimes the bombs were dropped on buildings and rebel-held areas. Other times, the bombs were dropped on open spaces like roundabouts, where busses picked up passengers. Thirty- five people were killed there, almost half women and children.

A total of 80 people died, and as ever, no 911 to call. Nobody, but those nearby were there to help.

Survivors searched for loved ones by hand.

Aleppo has been punished by bombing for nearly 18 months, when rebels moved in. Now the regime is trying to come back, as are al Qaeda-linked rebels nearby, who recently beat a man, apparently for graffiti against them.

Those left in Aleppo are now caught between two forces with little space for life left.
