Task force discovers, shuts down Nogales drug tunnel

NOGALES, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities shut down a drug smuggling tunnel discovered in the backyard of a Nogales residence.

A Nogales Tunnel Task Force investigation led to the discovery Tuesday of the tunnel, about one and a half miles north of the international border in the Nogales city limits, according to a news release.

Officials said the hand-dug tunnel is about 52 feet long, two feet wide and three feet long. It runs from the shed to a nearby underground sewage line that crosses the border. No people or drugs were found inside, but authorities seized about eight pounds of heroin, three pounds of marijuana and more than $1,400 from inside the home.

No arrests were made and the investigation is ongoing.
