SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Sunday in the city's Old Hill Neighborhood.

Police told CBS 3 that they responded to numerous shots fired calls at 11 a.m.  When they arrived on scene, officers found the victim lying on the ground of the second floor of the house at 513 Union Street.

The victim, who police said was a 21-year-old city resident, was suffering from a gunshot wound.  He was transported to an area hospital and died in the emergency room.

Police said evidence at the scene suggests the victim was also armed with a handgun and possibly used it before he was shot.

Hours later, police continue to investigate the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Springfield Police Department's detective bureau at 413-787-6355.
