Pope Francis prayed for peace in his first Christmas message as the leader of the Catholic church.
He spoke to tens of thousands of people who jammed into the Vatican. The pontiff singled out several countries ravaged by war.
He has tried to raise concern over persecution and attacks on Christians in parts of the Middle East and Africa.
The Pope said he was joining in the song of Christmas angels with all those hoping "for a better world," and with those who "care for others, humbly."
