PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a man killed by officers during a bank robbery attempt on Saturday was a 40-year-old from the Midwest who appears to have no connections to Arizona.
Officer James Holmes says Sunday that Mario Edward Garnett served for four years in the U.S. Army. He says it's unclear when Garnett arrived in the state.
The FBI said earlier Sunday that the man shot in the robbery attempt is believed to be the same man accused in the shooting death of a Mississippi police officer and the wounding of another.
Investigators believe the same suspect also tried to rob a bank in Atlanta on Monday, hours before he allegedly shot the two officers in Tupelo, Miss.
The Phoenix shooting happened Saturday morning at a Compass Bank branch in the near-northwest part of the city.
