TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is hoping pet owners will make 2014 a good year by neutering their pets, helping prevent unwanted litters from happening.

Throughout the month of January, the HSSA will be offering pet owners a chance to get their male pets (dog or cat) neutered for only $20.  This reduced fee is made possible with help from a PetSmart Charities grant.

"In southern Arizona alone there are thousands of unwanted litters being born every day in our city leaving them with no place to call home. Neutering and spaying your pet is the key to solving animal homelessness in southern Arizona," said Samantha Esquivel, Public Relations Lead, in a recent news release.

There are 200 appointments available and they are filling up quickly; to make an appointment call the Humane Society of Southern Arizona at (520) 881-0321.

Pets must be a minimum of eight weeks old. The HSSA encourages pet owners to bring proof of vaccinations; pets without proof of vaccination can be vaccinated for an additional cost.
