Cam Newton Foundation treats students to shopping spree

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A former standout football player at Auburn University is making sure a few lucky kids are ready for Monday's BCS National Championship Game.

The Cam Newton Foundation, an organization committed to making a positive impact in youth health and community service, handed out gift cards to 60 kids in Auburn and Montgomery for a private shopping spree.

The Foundation teamed up with Academy Sports and Outdoors for the spree. The sporting goods store is the official sporting goods retailer of the Auburn Tigers.

The lucky participants were from the Boys and Girls Club of Montgomery and Wrights Mill Road Elementary in Auburn where Newton mentored during his time with the Tigers.

Each student was given $100 to buy Auburn gear including shirts, jerseys, caps and novelty items.

"It's a good blend of everyone getting together to make sure these kids have an enjoyable time watching the game and have some new gear to cheer the team on with," explained Eric Herrera.

"I think he is a very nice guy to do this for us," said Kanita Wright. "Even though he is not at Auburn any more, he is still coming back to help, so I think he is a nice guy."

The Montgomery shopping spree was held Friday morning and 30 students took part. The Auburn shopping spree happened later in the afternoon with the other lucky kids.

Newton, who earned the Heisman Trophy and led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 2010 left for the NFL after Auburn's national championship win in 2010. He currently plays quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.
