TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A look back at January 8, 2011; it began as a ‘Congress on your Corner' event, in front of a Safeway at Ina and Oracle.

Then Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was at the store on a Saturday to speak with her constituents, just after Giffords began speaking several shots rang out; at 10:10 a.m. Jared Loughner took aim at Giffords and pulled the trigger.  There was panic, police sirens and ambulances in the area.

The weapon he used killed six people and wounded 13 others.

Six people lost their lives on January 8 – Dorothy Morris, Judge John Roll, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard, Gabe Zimmerman and a young girl Christina Taylor Green.

13 people were injured, including Giffords who had been shot in the head, and Congressman Ron Barber, who was an aide to Giffords at the time of the shooting.

This was a tragic event that shocked not only Arizonans, but the entire U.S. and even the world.  Out of this chaos several people were counted as heroes, among them was Daniel Hernandez, who is credited with saving the life of Giffords.  Hernandez has since moved past the tragedy, he has written a book and is currently with the Sunnyside School Board.
