Red Cross asking warm weather areas for blood donations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Weather has played a role in the lack of donations for the Red Cross recently, mainly in areas that were hit by snow and cold temperatures.

The Red Cross is now asking residents in areas with warmer weather to donate blood.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to head to one of two locations in the city that have extended their hours, this includes blood donation centers at Broadway and Kolb and Ina and La Cholla, and will remain that way until January 20.

Over 300 donation drives across the U.S. have been canceled due to inclement weather, and this means more than 9,300 donations have been missed since January 2.

According to the Red Cross there is an urgent need for type O, as well as negative types A & B, while platelet donors are needed for all types.

Platelet donations are at vital levels due to them being a key component of blood that is often needed by cancer patients, which require transfusions within ten days of donation.

Red Cross stated the blood already on the shelves helps save lives, when severe weather hits.

To find out the extended hours call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or go online to www.redcrossblood.org.
