A school janitor is accused of snooping on children while hiding in the crawlspace above bathroom ceilings.
Officials made the discovery Friday at Scales Elementary School in Brentwood, and they called for an emergency meeting with parents to inform them of what allegedly happened.
"It makes me feel sick that a little kid going to elementary school could be damaged for life, thinking that somebody is looking that way. It just robs them of their innocence," said parent Jennifer Volmer.
A school maintenance worker noticed something very unusual Friday when a ceiling tile was loose above a girls' restroom and the janitor was in the crawlspace, where he had no business being.
Williamson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney said officials don't know what, if anything, the janitor saw.
"Conditions were such that he could have been peeping if he had intended to," Looney said.
Authorities arrested 48-year-old Victor Alvarado, who worked for the janitorial service GCA Services Group, Inc.
Alvarado passed an FBI background check when he was hired, and GCA sent a statement saying he was terminated immediately.
It's not the first time GCA has had problems with its employees. Channel 4 News profiled the company when Metro contracted with GCA in 2010. We discovered at least three prior instances of GCA employees who were accused of sex crimes or theft.
After learning of the peeping accusations, Williamson County officials immediately notified parents and held a meeting that same night to tell them everything they knew.
"I thought they did a really good job with that," said parent Susan Day.
"It was an emotional meeting," Looney said. "I'm a father as well. I have a daughter. And some people were concerned that perhaps someone was looking at their child."
GCA provided Channel 4 News with the following statement, in its entirety:
"All proper background checks were conducted and documentation was in place. Upon learning of the incident at Scales Elementary, GCA Education Services immediately terminated Mr. Alvarado. GCA is fully supporting law enforcement and school officials to resolve this matter."
