Hit and run homicide suspect arrested in Kansas City

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities in Kansas City have arrested the suspect in the New Year's Day double homicide.

Michael D. Leday, 28, was wanted on suspicion of a hit and run incident that killed two people and injured another.

Police, K-9 units and U.S. Marshals arrested Leday after searching the woods behind a hotel in Kansas City.

Police say Patrick Balbastro, 32, and his girlfriend stopped their car to help Cindy Burnett, 46, who was being assaulted by a man.

The fight escalated and police say the attacker got into Balbastro's car and ran over the three people.

Balbastro was fatally injured and Burnett died at the scene. Balbastro's girlfriend remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The attacker drove off and later abandoned Balbastro's car after hitting a tree, police say.
